How to Prepare for an Earthquake

Earthquakes can happen anytime, anywhere. It is important to be prepared in case one strikes. Here are some tips:

  1. Have an emergency plan. This plan should include evacuation routes, meeting places, and contact information for family members.
  2. Keep a stockpile of food and water. You should have enough food and water to last for at least three days.
  3. Secure your home. Bolt down heavy furniture and appliances. Hang pictures and mirrors securely.
  4. Stay informed. Monitor weather reports and earthquake alerts. Know the earthquake risks in your area.

If an earthquake strikes:

  1. Drop, cover, and hold on. Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  2. Stay away from windows and outside doors. Glass can shatter and cause injuries.
  3. If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Stay in your car until the shaking stops.
  4. Do not use elevators. Elevators can malfunction during an earthquake and trap you inside.

After an earthquake:

  1. Check for injuries. Yourself and others around you for injuries.
  2. Inspect your home for damage. Look for downed power lines, gas leaks, and structural damage.
  3. Turn off utilities. If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply. If you see downed power lines, turn off the electricity.
  4. Follow instructions from authorities. Listen to the radio or TV for updates and instructions from local authorities.
